Daniel
Random thought:

I wonder if the trend in having a vertical tab bar in browsers will also have an impact in how we design websites.

In particular I am thinking about centered content, e.g. the timeline here on Mastodon. With a vertical tabs sidebar open that content is not really visually centered anymore.

Maybe I am just overthinking and this is not a real issue at all? 🤔

#web #design #development #browser #layout

This is a pretty good guide until you have enough experience under your belt to know when to violate the rule.

One of the secrets to learning good typography and layout is to look at actual books which do good layout and literally pick apart what it is they do. You can even use online tools to determine exactly what fonts they do use.

Consider the attached star forged page. One of the things about science fiction is it tends to use sans-serif fonts, and Starforged does so here in both the headers and the body text.

Offset boxes are very contrasty and clear. The page width in terms of margin is a little bit broader than yours, and the footer is very minimal. It comes across as modern, appropriate to the setting but still quite readable.

(cont)

#TTRPG #layout

Don't do that. The art inserts are good for the most part, though avoid doing it on the left side and wrapping around it because it makes it more difficult to read.

On the positive side, the background inserts are faint enough to be readable over it and I appreciate that.

I wouldt change the spectrum going from the left-hand pages to right-hand pages at the header and footer.

Pick something and consistently stick to it. The spectrum going across the entirety of a spread is thematically appropriate and would look better. In fact, remove the footer background color altogether. It's not necessary. Just use it up at the header.

That's probably enough stuff to start with. Get those things banged out. Crank out another version of the layout and let's see how that runs.

#TTRPG #layout

It needs to pop out from that bright background.

Likewise, the gray and black at the bottom for lettering just gets completely lost and goes across the Red Ranger's visor. So practically, that art should just move up another third.

The font for headings is great, but the body font really sucks. It's laid out entirely too densely for that spindly sans serif font. The eyes just sort of turn it into a bit of a mush combined with the straight right edge, which makes word spacing inconsistent from line to line. It's a pain to read.

Once you get to the general rules, things are a little better because things are more broken up vertically and the body text is a bit darker but it still could use a little looser kerning.

I'm not sure why you change the entire style of font when you list the traits because that's a terrible place to put a serif. Switch it out for something a little more related to the heading font or a bolder/heavier version of the body font and you'll be in good shape.

(cont)

#TTRPG #layout

It's all black and white and as such a far better text and quite printable.

As much as I enjoy the physicality of the color version, the black and white version is a better text and a better book.

That's just me dipping into the library here a little bit. Overall it's okay, but the fact that it doesn't use any spaces between paragraphs or indentation for the first line means that anything longer than one paragraph in a bit all runs together visually on the left column.

Oh yes, and paragraphs are all running full width of the page for a full line.

Apocalypse Frame is another indie, very sparse text in terms of layout. And the body font is smaller than I would really like, but it's a good choice of design.

(cont)

#TTRPG #layout

The art is all solid black and white, old school fantasy content. The font is comfortably large and not so dense that your eyes slide off of it. It's a great little book.

Siege Perilous has a similar kind of broad open clear layout. The tables get a little bit cramped from time to time, but not too bad. The choice of font for the boxes in offsets is terrible. Way too light and spindly, especially in the high-res version on a goldenrod background. The art is muddy but appropriate to the layout and mood.

Forgotten Ruin has been mentioned before, but it's worth repeating that it is clean, open, and makes really good use of color to a level which I can really only say Starforged matches.

I've got a couple of games here which are intended to be printed and played from a trifold sheet: Second Sun and Depths of Torment because they have so much information to pack on to a single page effectively, front and back. The font is inherently pretty overly tight, but both of them make good use of color to set off sections in minimal art as suited to their necessary designs.

(cont)

#TTRPG #layout
